The Objective

  1. Design the CCSF Class Schedule Catalog Cover for the year which will be published and distributed to the CCSF Students in San Francisco

  2. Pitch our design to the CCSF VP of Marketing who will select the best design

The Challenge

City College of San Francisco experienced a few setbacks and challenges when the community college announced that it was about to lose its accreditation in 2014 by the

accrediting commission unless an appeal is successful or if the college can make enough progress to win an extension to remain open.

The Second Challenge CCSF faced low attendance causing a dozen of classes to be canceled since the class needed a certain amount of students to sustain the class due to the college losing its accreditation. Students who attend an unaccredited institution are ineligible to receive federal or state financial aid and their diplomas. If CCSF lost its accreditation, it would prevent over 85,000 college students from attending one of the largest Community Colleges in the world.

The Design Approach

My partner, Sally, and I collaborated together to design the cover page. We came up with several different concepts and ideas on how to approach this and it took us less than a few days to come up with our concept. I came up with the tagline "Connect With Your Future" and that was the heart of our design which inspired Sally to come up with the subway lines to indicate the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) which connects San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area transit. After we finished the subway lines and design, we decided to add images that show Teachers and Students collaborating during class.

The CCSF VP of Marketing vision was about Connection and suggested that we add images of students and instructors together in class. So this what we did for our design.

We obtained these images from the Photography department. The images were a bit dull in color and needed some touch-up. So I changed some of the colors of clothing, so the colors on the clothing can pop more.

We just had minor edits and we were finished with the design within 2-3 weeks which allowed us more time to work on other projects.

The Pitch

Sally and I pitched the concept to our peers and to the CCSF VP of Marketing. We were both hoping to win the competition. The VP of Marketing and our Design Instructors deliberated before they announced the winner. The VP of Marketing selected our design because it stood out to him because of our tagline "Connect With Your Future" which tied the design altogether and this was the vision he envisioned for our CCSF Class Schedule Cover Page.
